Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2019 18:28:54 -0700 From: Sandy Ross Subject: class update Message from Borries: Dear Biophysics Students: To encourage participation in the class (which is part of your grade) each instructor will assign 3 manuscripts for presentation by one student. So each student will have the opportunity to present one manuscript to the class in standard journal club format: You have 15 minutes to discuss the manuscript and let us know: 1. what was the object of the research? 2. what was the hypothesis? 3. how was it tested - i.e., what methods, technology was applied? 4. what results were obtained and what was contributed? 5. what was the significance/impact of the work, and what was learned? 6. were there any weaknesses or open questions left unanswered? 7. anything else you thought was noteworthy and interesting Then there will be 10 minutes of Q & A by the rest of the students, and opportunity to discuss. To give everyone a chance to participate, every student who does not present on a paper needs to submit 2-3 questions about the presented manuscript, which means everyone needs to read the 3 assigned manuscripts and be familiar with the work. Please submit your questions to the instructor of the section to which the manuscript belongs. The instructor will moderate the Q & A session. Time limits will be strictly enforced, so practice your presentation beforehand to make sure you stay within the allotted time. The quality of your presentation will be part of your grade. Each student should send their top 4 choices of manuscripts for presentation to demeler@gmail.com and we will try to accommodate your top choices. If no choices are sent in by Jan 31st, we will assign manuscripts based on availability. The selections will be listed online on the biophysics website, or go to the direct link: https://demeler.uleth.ca/biophysics/Presentation-Assignment-List.html All manuscripts that can be chosen for presentation are labeled with a prefix 1-, 2- or 3-, and are listed in the archive directory from each instructor: https://demeler.uleth.ca/biophysics/archive/Ross/ https://demeler.uleth.ca/biophysics/archive/Demeler/ https://demeler.uleth.ca/biophysics/archive/Savelyev/ https://demeler.uleth.ca/biophysics/archive/Brookes/ All other manuscripts are optional and intended to provide further background to the presented lecture material. thanks, Sandy
